Dar 91 is situated in the old medina of Essaouira - renowned as Morocco's most welcoming and laid back coastal resort, around 2.5 hours west of Marrakech, on the Atlantic coast. The town's well-preserved, French-designed 18th century medina, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is fully pedestrianised. Here you can explore Moroccan culture at your own pace, and have a beach holiday at the same time. Our house is in the Chbanat district, near the Bab Doukkala - a relatively undeveloped part of town famous for its textile workshops, where weavers spin their yarn and produce beautiful cloth on hand looms, set back from the street in tiny workshops.
What you can see and do
Lose yourself in the labyrinthine medina
Take a trip to the hammam
Watch the world go by from a street café
Strike some bargains in the souks
Stroll along the 5km beach
Go for a camel ride
Play football with the local children
Surf on one of the world's most famous surfing beaches
Watch the weavers and carpenters at work
Wake up early and watch the fisherman in the harbour
Discover great Moroccan food at our recommended restaurants
Sit on our roof terrace and watch the sun set over the medina
Rooms and food
Two double bedrooms, one of which also has a single bed (1.55m long) suitable for older children; a travel cot is also available. We do not rent ‘by the room', so you'll be booking the whole place to yourselves. Our house manager provides breakfast essentials and delivers fresh bread/croissants etc each morning - but leaves you to enjoy your privacy. Evening meals can be arranged on request.
Why we are special
We have tried to make Dar 91 into a comfortable ‘home from home', with an emphasis on enabling everyone who stays there to go home having genuinely interacted with the local culture. In contrast to many Moroccan properties let out to tourists, ours is self-contained and has a feeling of privacy. Although we have included many Western elements in the renovation, we have focused on helping visitors genuinely ‘get away from it all', while striving not to over-do the ‘luxury' tag - which we find out-of-sync with local realities. We take our responsibilities as foreign property owners seriously and do all we can to encourage our customers to respect and enjoy this beautiful place and culture.
